About Hydrostat

What this is

Hydrostat is a water unit converter for people who work with water supply: utility engineers, hydrologists, desalination and reuse project teams, regulators and students. It converts volume and flow quantities across the unit systems used in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia and the Gulf.

Conversion factors

Every conversion runs through a single millilitre base. The primary factors are: 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L; 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L; 1 acre-foot = 1,233,481.8375 L; 1 m³ = 1,000 L; 1 megalitre = 1,000,000 L; 1 MGD = 3,785,410 L/day. Rate units are normalised to a per-day basis, so 1 m³/s is treated as 86,400 m³/day.

Rounding

Results are displayed to three decimal places with thousands separators. The underlying arithmetic is full double precision; only the display is rounded, so chained conversions do not accumulate display error.

Conversion factors are from NIST Special Publication 811 and the US Geological Survey water-science glossary. Capacity examples reference published figures from operators and project developers, including OceanWell; figures are attributed where they appear.

Relationship with OceanWell

Hydrostat is built and supported in partnership with OceanWell, and the pod visualisation uses OceanWell's published water-farm capacity figures. The conversion factors themselves are standards-based and independent of any project.
